About Us

I (Curvin) grew up on a dairy farm in Dalton, Ohio, then rented and managed my own dairy operation for over six years. We sold out of the farming shortly after we were married, then reinvested in the sharpening business in 2001. I was working a day job full time, so it took a number of years for the sharpening service to develop. We started out as Wenger’s Sharpening Service in Dalton, OH, then after our move to (New Bedford) Baltic, OH, we changed it to New Bedford Sharpening Service. Since moving, the business has steadily expanded and we now have been in full-time operation (sales, service, sharpening, and repair) since June of 2009.

In January of 2013, we moved back to Dalton, OH to be closer to Curvin’s family. Since New Bedford Sharpening Service was location-specific we needed to change our business name again, so we decided to go back to using Wenger’s Sharpening Service.

We still offer all the same sales, service, and repair as we did before.

Family

We are a family-owned and operated business. The Lord has given us seven wonderful children, which keeps us quite busy. We are a homeschooling family, which works very well, as my wife (Eileen) and I work together in the business and raising our family. I do all of the actual sharpening, clipper repair, and tech support. Eileen takes care of all the product cleaning, packaging, billing, mail orders, helping customers, and answering the phone.

Training

In the spring of 2001, we went to Decatur, IL where we received our first professional training. Larry Brooks, of Sharp Edges, spent one-on-one time with me, giving the basics of clipper repair and professionally sharpening; clipper blades, scissors, and knives.

In August of 2007, we went to Atlanta, GA, where I received my training to sharpen medical instruments, from Debbie Finck, owner of Nose To The Grindstone.

In September of 2007, I went back to IL and spent two days one-on-one with Larry Brooks. This is when I received my Hamaguri factory training and was factory certified to sharpen bevel-edge (barber) scissors and convex-edge (beauty & pet grooming) shears.

We work with The Edge Pro and C J’s Grooming Tools, which are authorized service centers for most of the major brands of clippers. We also work closely with numerous other suppliers for machines, supplies, & problem-solving. Some of these are Wolff Industries, Nebraska Blades, Extreme Kut, Rx Honing Corp., Perfecto Products, Premier Sheep Supplies, Precision Sharp, and U.S. Diamond Wheel to name a few.

Additionally, I have spent hundreds of hours on my own, going through training DVDs, reading articles on sharpening, and networking with other sharpeners from across the United States and Canada. Plus, I am a hands-on kind of person and have learned a tremendous amount of valuable information by experience, as I am always focused on trying to better my method and technique while I work.

Focus

Some sharpeners focus on low price and some focus on speed, but we focus on quality. I saw a motto once that describes our vision and goal in the service we provide: “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.” I was taught that “sharpening is only half the job”. So, we not only sharpen the instrument given to us, but we also recondition it to as close to like-new performance and appearance as possible.

Mission Statement

We endeavor to do our best to meet or exceed the expectations of our customers. We try to return each and every instrument to the customer in the condition we would desire if it were our own.

Guarantee

We guarantee every item leaving our shop to perform 100% according to the quality of manufacturing make-up and the present condition it is in. We will work with our customers to remedy any issue that may arise. If a problem results due to our service on the tool, we will either re-do the job or refund the service expense (at our discretion). Guarantee is limited to the work we have done and does not cover other problems or shipping expenses.
